Fabergé Rock Crystal Vase with Silver Mounts and Guilloché Enamel, Michael Perchin, St Petersburg, 1898–1903
Estimate: 6000-8000€Very Rare Fabergé Silver, Engraved Rock Crystal and Guilloché Enamel Vase
Maker’s mark of “MP” and “Faberge”. Petersburg, 1898–1903.
Inv. No. 1163. Height: 7.6 cm. Total weight: 114.8 gThis rare Fabergé vase, crafted under the supervision of the firm’s leading workmaster Michael Perchin, exemplifies the refinement of late Imperial lapidary art. The delicately engraved rock crystal body rests on a silver base with translucent guilloché enamel in deep red.
The exceptional clarity and size of the smoky quartz used for this piece are remarkable, as such flawless crystals were sourced exclusively from the Ural Mountains and reserved for Fabergé’s workshops. Cutting rock crystal of this purity without fractures required exceptional skill, making this vase a true testament to the artistry of Fabergé’s lapidaries. Comparable vases are discussed in Franz Birbaum’s Memoirs (in: Habsburg & Lopato, Fabergé: Imperial Jeweller, Milan, 1993, p. 457).
Fabergé collaborated with several renowned stone-cutting centers, including the Imperial Peterhof Lapidary Works and workshops in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. After 1908, the firm’s own lapidaries, such as Peter Kremlev and Peter Derbychev, created masterpieces from hardstones within the Fabergé atelier.
Michael Perchin (1860–1903) was Fabergé’s chief workmaster from 1888 until his death in 1903. Trained under the court jeweler Vladimir Finikov, Perchin oversaw the creation of over 20,000 works, including twenty-eight Imperial Easter eggs and the celebrated Kelch series. His workshop produced many of Fabergé’s most technically sophisticated and artistically refined gold, silver, and hardstone objects, often in collaboration with his talented assistant Henrik Wigström, who succeeded him after 1903. A malachite casket with the lid is centred with an exceptionally fine architectural micromosaic depicting St Peter’s Square in Rome. Works by Leonid Pyanovsky are described as scarce; only a small number are noted in Russian museum collections, including examples in the Pavlovsk State Museum-Reserve and the A. M. Gorky Museum in Nizhny Novgorod. Estimate: 3500-4500€A Rare Russian Porcelain Handle with Gold Mounts and Guilloché Enamel Moscow, 1912-1917. Imperial Porcelain Factory; makers mark of W. A. Bolin.
Porcelain, gold, guilloché enamel. Total weight: 45 g, Total lenght with screw: 8 cm. Diameter near the screw: 2 cm. Diameter of the top: 2,7 cm.
A refined handle of tapering baluster form, executed in white porcelain and painted with a soft green feather-like motif. The lower mount is fashioned in gold and enriched with translucent pink opal guilloché enamel laid over an engine-turned ground. The mount is further ornamented with applied laurel swags, a motif associated with the neoclassical vocabulary that remained popular in Faberge circle decorative arts of the late Imperial period.
The marks visible on the gold rim indicate Russian production of the early 20th century by the Bolin firm, while the porcelain body is attributed to the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Wilhelm (Vasily Andreyevich) Bolin, son of Henrik Bolin, continued the family’s Moscow business with the support of his St. Petersburg cousins, Eduard and Gustav. From 1888 to 1912, the Moscow branch operated under the name C.E. Bolin; after Vasily Andreyevich had established financial independence, it was renamed V.A. Bolin. The firm’s shop was located on Kuznetsky Most, Moscow’s principal jewellery district, not far from the premises of Carl Fabergé.
The Moscow branch catered to a broader clientele than its St. Petersburg counterpart and was especially known for its silver wares, including table services, flatware, and luxury accessories. In 1912, Vasily Andreyevich Bolin became the last member of the family to receive the title of the Imperial Court Supplier.
At the turn of the 20th century, the firm’s production combined reinterpretations of historical European styles with the fluid decorative language of Art Nouveau, particularly favoured in Moscow. This synthesis was distinguished by a specifically Moscow character, marked by pictorial richness, ornamental freedom, and festive elegance.Starting price: 3000€

Ekaterinburg Lapidary Factory, second half of the 18th century
Silver-gilt, cut topaz
An oval pendant set with a finely carved topaz cameo depicting the profile portrait of Empress Catherine II, mounted in a silver-gilt frame with suspension loop. The work is attributed to the Imperial Lapidary Factory in Ekaterinburg, one of the foremost centers of stone carving in Russia.
Founded in 1726, the Ekaterinburg Lapidary Factory became Russia’s leading center for hardstone carving. Initially producing small items from jasper and quartz, it expanded in the mid-18th century to supply marble details for Imperial palaces. From 1782 the factory specialized in large vases and bowls from jasper, malachite, and other stones, later creating monumental works in the Empire style that served as diplomatic gifts.
In the 19th century, under the patronage of the Academy of Arts and later the Imperial Cabinet, the factory produced malachite vases, church furnishings, and decorative objects for the Imperial court, securing its place as one of the foremost lapidary workshops in Europe.

Ignaty expanded production, introduced specialization of labor and modern equipment, and established a training department for craftsmen. He also collaborated with leading sculptors and artists, including Ivan Vitali and Pyotr Klodt, to create designs.
By the mid-19th century, the firm was considered among the finest Russian jewelers and a pioneer of the national style in decorative arts. It earned numerous gold medals at Russian industrial exhibitions (1835–1865) and international recognition, including a gold medal and the Order of the Legion of Honor at the 1851 London and 1867 Paris World Exhibitions. Sazikov’s small-scale sculpture on Russian themes became especially celebrated.
After Ignaty’s death in 1868, the firm passed to his sons Sergei, Pavel, and Valentin, with branches in Moscow and St. Petersburg, until 1887, when it was sold to Ivan Khlebnikov’s firm. This spoon exemplifies the refined artistry and technical mastery that made Sazikov a leading name in Russian silver.

Zhostovo, Vishnyakov Workshop, 1880s
Papier-mâché, lacquer, polychrome painting. Dimensions: Height:10.5 cm, Diameter: 11.5 cm
An elegant lacquer tea caddy of barrel form with a fitted lid, painted on the cover with a spirited scene of a troika drawing a sleigh at full speed across a winter landscape. Set against a dark ground, the composition is rendered in warm ochre, brown, and green tones, the movement of the horses and figures animated by the compact circular format of the lid. The smooth, glossy black surface of the body, articulated by narrow reeded bands, enhances the jewel-like quality of the painted miniature.
Boxes of this type, with a wide mouth and tightly fitted lid, were traditionally used for storing loose-leaf tea. The present example belongs to the celebrated tradition of Russian lacquerware produced in the village of Zhostovo near Moscow. The manufacture of painted papier-mâché objects under lacquer was established there by Filipp Vishnyakov in the late 18th century and was further developed by his sons; by the 1880s, the Vishnyakov enterprise had become widely known through its participation in industrial exhibitions, where its wares received broad recognition and numerous awards.Starting price: 150€
