A Russian charcoal-burning samovar of elegant vase form, made by the Tula master Gavrila Efimov. The body has a pronounced narrow constriction below the shoulder and a broad projecting upper rim. The sides are worked with wide concave vertical facets, giving the surface a lively play of reflections and a restrained architectural rhythm.
The upper tray is broad and flat, rising slightly like a collar. The stepped cover is fitted with two small grips and a low cylindrical chimney with a pierced collar. The side handles are composed of upward-curving smooth plates terminating in cast shell-shaped grips; they are attached to the body by oval relief mounts. The tap has a rounded knop and a slender curved handle with a wooden acorn-shaped grip. The samovar stands on a square base with four cast feet modelled as stylised bird claws. Samovars made by well-known factories in the 1850–1880 period, such as A. G. Sokolov, Gavrila Efimov, the Somovs, and others, often had lion-paw feet.Starting price: 500€

Poland (Warsaw), second half of the 19th century
Brass, silver-plated

The spout stem is shaped with a central ringed molding, while the spout’s bracket features a curved, sculptural design. A sensitive child portrait depicting Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, shown in the sailor suit that became inseparable from his public image from earliest childhood. Presented half-length against a softly muted background, the young sitter faces the viewer directly, his features delicately modelled and his expression combining youthful openness with ceremonial restraint.
The sailor costume was not merely a charming feature of childhood dress, but part of the visual language of the Romanov dynasty. Boys of the Imperial family were raised with military service in view and from an early age wore naval dress, uniforms, or the costume of specific regiments. Civilian clothing was used only rarely, most often during holidays abroad. In this context, Alexei’s sailor suit reflects both dynastic tradition and the close symbolic association of the Romanovs with the Russian Navy. The same convention appears in earlier portraits and photographs of Emperor Alexander III and Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, likewise represented in sailor costume.Starting price: 3000€
