Lot 0233
Russian Lacquer Tea Caddy with Troika Scene, Vishnyakov Workshop, 1880s
Estimate: 200-300€A Russia tea Caddy with Troika
Zhostovo, Vishnyakov Workshop, 1880s
Papier-mâché, lacquer, polychrome painting. Dimensions: Height:10.5 cm, Diameter: 11.5 cm
An elegant lacquer tea caddy of barrel form with a fitted lid, painted on the cover with a spirited scene of a troika drawing a sleigh at full speed across a winter landscape. Set against a dark ground, the composition is rendered in warm ochre, brown, and green tones, the movement of the horses and figures animated by the compact circular format of the lid. The smooth, glossy black surface of the body, articulated by narrow reeded bands, enhances the jewel-like quality of the painted miniature.
Boxes of this type, with a wide mouth and tightly fitted lid, were traditionally used for storing loose-leaf tea. The present example belongs to the celebrated tradition of Russian lacquerware produced in the village of Zhostovo near Moscow. The manufacture of painted papier-mâché objects under lacquer was established there by Filipp Vishnyakov in the late 18th century and was further developed by his sons; by the 1880s, the Vishnyakov enterprise had become widely known through its participation in industrial exhibitions, where its wares received broad recognition and numerous awards.Starting price: 150€
