Lot 0333
Tabarzine (Saddle Axe) Indo-Persian, India or Iran
Estimate: 2000-3000€Tabarzine (Saddle Axe)
Indo-Persian, India or Iran, 19th CenturyA finely crafted example of a Tabarzin, the traditional Indo-Persian saddle axe associated with both warfare and ceremonial display. Widely used across Persia and the Indian subcontinent, this distinctive form- often carried by cavalry – features the elegant, crescent-shaped blade characteristic of the type.
The present piece is forged entirely in steel and richly engraved throughout. The axe head is adorned with intricate vegetal scrollwork, stylized floral motifs, and finely executed arabesque borders, reflecting the refined decorative vocabulary of Indo-Persian metalwork. Such ornamentation elevates the weapon beyond its martial function, situating it within a tradition of courtly craftsmanship and symbolic prestige.
Compact in scale (length: 50 cm), this tabarzine belongs to the shorter form of the type, suitable for close combat or as a personal sidearm, while also serving as an object of status and artistic expression.
Preserved in good condition, this engraved steel axe represents a compelling example of 19th-century Indo-Persian arms, combining elegant form, cultural symbolism, and meticulous workmanship
Dimensions: 50 x 20 x 5 cm.
