A rectangular silver pill box, the lid beautifully decorated with translucent cobalt-blue guilloché enamel over a wave-patterned ground. The vivid enamel surface creates a shimmering play of light, a hallmark of Russian enameling at the turn of the century.
Ivan Savelievich Britsyn (1870–1952), a gifted St. Petersburg enameller, briefly worked for Carl Fabergé before establishing his own workshop in 1903. His refined guilloché enamel objects—cigarette cases, compacts, clocks, and accessories—earned him a gold medal at the 1909 International Exhibition and a clientele that included the Imperial court. Even after the Revolution, Britsyn continued to create works of remarkable quality, often compared with those of Fabergé.

Such items were often presented as gifts and carried as part of a lady’s or gentleman’s nécessaire.
Alexander Väkevä (Wiakeva) – Son of St. Petersburg goldsmith Stephan Wiakeva, Alexander continued the family workshop after his father’s death, working alongside his brother Konstantin (1867–1902). The Wiakevas collaborated closely with the firm of Carl Fabergé, and their objects often bear Fabergé marks and inventory numbers. A set of six silver napkin rings, each decorated with colorful cloisonné enamel depicting stylized fruits and berries, including cherries, raspberries, blueberries, and plums. The vivid naturalistic motifs are set against a white enamel ground, combining traditional Russian decorative themes with the modern aesthetic taught at the Imperial Stroganov School.
At the turn of the 20th century, the Imperial Stroganov School in Moscow became a leading center for the art of enamel. Alongside major firms such as Fabergé, Ovchinnikov, and Khlebnikov, the School developed its own distinctive approach, combining traditional Russian motifs with the aesthetics of modern design.
Its workshops trained students in cloisonné, painted, champlevé, plique-à-jour, and guilloché enamels, producing objects of remarkable originality and technical refinement. Works ranged from icons, vessels, and jewelry to miniature portraits and decorative panels, many of which were presented at national exhibitions and as gifts to members of the Imperial family.
The present set was retailed by the Court Supplier firm of Ivan Khlebnikov, which employed many graduates of the Stroganov School.Starting price: 15000€
