Imperial Russian Officer’s Shashka (Model 1913)
Estimate: 5000-6000€Imperial Russian Officer’s Shashka (Model 1913)
Maker: Alex Coppel, Solingen
Markings: Double-headed Imperial eagle, “N II” monogram, and “SLAVA” stamp on hilt
Scabbard: Original metal scabbard with twin suspension ringsA fine and scarce Imperial Russian officer’s shashka, Model 1913, fitted with a German-manufactured blade by Alex Coppel of Solingen. Produced before World War I for the Imperial cavalry under Tsar Nicholas II, this example combines refined Solingen craftsmanship with distinct Russian Imperial symbolism.
The gently curved, single-edged blade with triple fullers is etched on one side with the Imperial double-headed eagle, and on the reverse with the monogram “N II” beneath a crown, representing Emperor Nicholas II. The ricasso is stamped “ALEX COPPEL SOLINGEN” with the company’s sword-and-scales emblem.
The wooden hilt, shaped in the classic shashka form with a beaked pommel, bears a clear “SLAVA” stamp, likely denoting inspection or later arsenal service marking. The weapon is accompanied by its original metal scabbard with two suspension rings, showing honest age wear but retaining its original fittings and structure.
Dimensions:
Total length: 96.5 cm
Blade length: 79.4 cm
Blade width: 3.2 cm
Condition:
Very good example with crisp etchings, sharp blade edge, and strong markings throughout. Minor wear and light patina to hilt and scabbard consistent with age. All components appear original and matching.
Remarks:
An authentic and highly collectible example of the Imperial Russian Model 1913 officer’s shashka, with Nicholas II monogram, Alex Coppel Solingen blade, and rare “SLAVA” hilt stamp. A distinguished piece of pre-revolutionary Russian military history.
