The Nemirov-Kolodkine firm traces its origins to Nikolay Vasilyevich Nemirov (later Nemirov-Kolodkine), who trained as a silversmith from the age of fourteen. In 1843 he moved to Moscow, entering the service of merchant Artemy Kolodkin, a prominent dealer in precious metal goods. After marrying Kolodkin’s daughter, Darya, Nemirov inherited both capital and reputation, eventually becoming a first-guild merchant and founding the “Trading House of N.V. Nemirov-Kolodkine.”

By the 1870s the firm was a leading Moscow supplier of gold, silver, diamond, and ecclesiastical objects, with shops in the city’s main commercial districts and at the Nizhny Novgorod Fair. From 1876 the company regularly received commissions for silverware from the Imperial Palace administration. In 1881–83 Nemirov established a factory-trading partnership with his nephews, ensuring succession of the family business.

The firm became renowned for the diversity of its production, which included church silver, presentation pieces, and luxury tableware, often created in collaboration with talented designers and artists. Today, works by Nemirov-Kolodkine are highly valued by collectors, though their popularity has also led to widespread forgeries.
