Estimate: 35000-45000€Lot 0009
A very rare Russian bronze composition ”Russian Knight – Vityaz”
Estimate: 35000-45000€A very rare Russian bronze composition ”Russian Knight – Vityaz”. Author Baron Peter Klodt. A rare version of the statuette, found in archival documents under the name “Russian Warrior in a Helmet and Chainmail”. In the mid-1840s, Klodt worked on groups for the Nevsky (Blagoveshchensky) Bridge in St. Petersburg. In the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA) we found project sketches from 1846. Among them, the horse-mounted figures of warriors in ancient Russian attire stand out.
Similar drawings are also found in the collection of the Russian Museum in Saint-Petersburg. The statuettes “Russian Warrior in a Helmet and Chainmail” and “Slav with a Pike,” notable for their meticulous recreation of military weaponry from the 14th–17th centuries, were most likely created as models for the unrealized project of a bridge across the Neva. Petersburg, second part of the 19th century. Dimensions: 57 x 50 x 17.5 cm.
